Head on over to the Oregon Coast for the annual sand castle contest. This is a great summer activity for groups or immediate family members to participate in. You can either build your piece of art or watch as the magnificent pieces of art work take shape.

The Oregon Coast beaches are known for their contests and ability to attract fine sculptors. A typical contest begins with each individual or team given a piece of beach area. They can build their structure with only the sand within their designated perimeter.

Finding Oregon Beach agates is a great family adventure as well as giving that personal satisfaction of finding a prime rock. I studied geology in college and simply find that rocks can tell a complete part of history. It's really exciting to find a superb rock like an agate.

Agates are made from silicon dioxide, a quartz material either clear or colored from other minerals. The Oregon Beach agates typically display translucent colors and are commonly referred to as jasper. For the most part, the agates display a true sense of beauty about them. They are great to add to a collection or spice up an aquarium.

Nearly every Oregon Beach will be a host to some beautiful agates. With the ongoing pounding surf and inclement weather, agates are revealed from their secret hidings. All that's required is a little searching on your part. Granted, it could take hours before you find the "perfect" specimen but it's worth it.

Our kids, and I'd say most kids, love the idea of looking for agates. It's like looking for buried treasure. Use this a an opportune time to bring the family together, hunt for the Oregon Beach agate.

Agates are typically a little heavier than most rocks so they tend to sink or hide beneath other rocks. Just turn over a few rocks and you may find the gem you're looking for. A garden rake is a good asset to have on the beach too. You can uncover some of these precious stones that you could have otherwise missed.

As of this writing, 2006, it's legal to pick up agates for personal use. Commercial harvesting of agates is not legal. There are some areas of protected coastline which restricts the removal of anything from the Oregon Beach. These areas are posted, just be sure to abide by the ordinance.

We just returned from our annual Oregon Coast tour visiting of course, the Oregon Sea Lion Caves. If you haven't stopped in you're missing out.

The caves have a unique history about the preservation of the coastal sea lions. If it wasn't for the Oregon Sea Lion Caves, there may be no sea lions along our coastal waters. At the turn of the century, there was a $5 bounty on sea lions. That was a lot of money and presented many with a unique business opportunity, killing sea lions. Thanks to the Sea Lion Caves and the owners of the caves, many sea lions were spared yielding today's population.

The caves are a great place to stop as you meander along the Oregon Coast. Located near Florence, Oregon, you have easy access to the caves and the spectacular view of the Heceta Head Light House. And you can get up close to the sea lions in their natural habitat. If you have children, they'll be mesmerized by the sea lions, watching them play in the water or relax along the rocks high above the churning water.

It's truly an amazing site, we never get tired of visiting the Oregon Sea Lion Caves. If you're planning a trip along the spectacular Oregon Coast soon, plan on a visit to the Sea Lion Caves and bring your camera. Unfortunately you cannot use a camera flash in the caves; however, you can get some gorgeous shots of the panoramic views outside.

The Independent Film Producer, Tag Entertainment, is one to use caution if you're an investor. We invested into Tag Entertainment, based on what we thought was a trusting relationship, only to find that we've been SCAMMED.

We were approached by this independent film producer in 2003 regarding investing into their family films. After some research we decided to invest a little money into the movie Santa Trap. Little did we know it was a real "trap". Nevertheless, we continued to build a trusting relationship, so we thought, with Tag Entertainment. Later we were approach to invest into another movie production, Black Beauty. Tag was teaming up with Travolta Family Films to produce this movie. With the Travolta name, our level of trust increased. As a result we invested a larger sum of money.

As time went on we continually contacted this independent film producer, Tag Entertainment, about the production. Apparently they were going through production challenges. Then finally after nearly 3-years the movie was completed; however, we found out that Tag Entertainment did not produce the movie with Travolta Family Films.

Currently, who knows when the movie will be released and it wasn't a movie made for the Big Screen, it was a movie made for TV. This was not our understanding when we made our initial investment.

So the bottom line, Tag Entertainment SCAMMED us. I've tried to get our money back; however, it seems the only way is through the court process. If anyone has any suggestions, we'd appreciate it. Tag simply took our money, broke the contract and has no misgivings about it. I would never recommend this independent film producer, Tag Entertainment with Steve Austin acting as the CEO. How can a dishonest company continue to do business is beyond me.

The company is also listed on the stock exchange as TAGE. It's only been a failing stock.

If you're one who invested money with an independent film maker I suggest that you use caution. In 2003 we invested thousands of dollars into Tag Entertainment. That was a huge investment mistake. We trusted Tag with its proclamation of making high quality family films.

Since we've made the investment with this independent film maker we've made NO money and receive NO customer service. I've written several letters to Steve Austin, the CEO; however, he has yet communicated with me directly. An employee of Tag Entertainment will call after I've sent a round of letters. The call usually makes reference to, this is a "long term investment".

BEWARE...The movie Black Beauty, produced by Tag Entertainment, is not the movie we originally thought.

We are one of a few who invested several thousands of dollars into the movie production of Black Beauty. Unfortunately, we learned that the movie was not produced as originally planned. We invested money with the knowledge that the movie was to be produced by Tag Entertainment and Travolta Family Films. To our knowledge, Travolta Family Films did not produce the movie. Our contract with Tag Entertainment states, Travolta Family Films will produce the movie.

Also, our contract states that Robert Wagner will star in the Black Beauty production. To our understanding he is not in the movie.

We've contacted Tag Entertainment on numerous occasions; however, we merely get the "run around". We've sent letters to the CEO, Steve Austin but he does not reply.

We made our initial investment in 2003 and as of 2006 we have not made any money. We caution you if you plan on investing with TAG Entertainment. We are very disappointed. Apparently Tag is not a customer oriented company, therefore, we question their business ethics.

Recently Tag Entertainment went public, their stock symbol is TAGE. We encourage you to look deeply into the company before investing. We'd like to get our money back, especially since Tag did not abide by their end of the contract. Tag has not responded to our request.

We entrusted Tag with our hard earned money but Tag Entertainment has no respect for us. It appears the only recourse is to file legal action but that will essentially eat up our investment. Our desire is that Tag Entertainment live up to their end of our contract. It's because of the Travolta name and Robert Wagner's name that we made the initial investment into the movie Black Beauty.

Crescent City California is truly a magnificent coastal city to participate in the quality Oregon Coast experience. We just finished our Spring Oregon Coast tour to compile the newest and greatest updates about the coast. We must admit, if you're traveling the Oregon Coast, be sure to include a quick trip into California and check out what this coastal town has to offer.

If there wasn't an apparent border crossing between Oregon and California, you'd never know you were in California while visiting Crescent City. This quaint coastal town is an extension of the Oregon Coast.

The beach area, just south of town, is a crescent shape with a superb sandy beach. It's the perfect place for a stroll, and if you have kids, an ideal place to play. Our young kids enjoyed building a fort out of the mounds of driftwood.

While visiting town you'll want to check out the Battery Point Lighthouse. It's located at the end of "H" Street, simply ask any local and they can point you in the right direction.

The Battery Point Lighthouse was built in 1856 and is still in operation. It's a part of the historical Oregon Coast lighthouses. You can participate in a guided tour or simply relax and take in the magnificent beauty.

Crescent City is a perfect place to use as a base area to check out the Redwoods. You'll have the ability to check out Jedediah Smith Redwoods and Del Norte Coastal Redwoods. You can gather all the information you need from the Chamber of Commerce, 1001 Front Street.

There are several area motels too. We stayed at the Comfort Inn. They are located off Hwy 101 on the ocean side. It was a comfortable place to stay, right along the beach. What we particularly like, the Comfort Inn is part of Choice Hotels, a large conglomerate of hotels, that offer rewards. Be sure to take advantage of their reward program. Check with any of the Choice Hotels for all the info.

We highly recommend that you check out this California coatal town and make it a part of your Oregon Coast tour. It fits perfectly.

Airline ticket prices change regularly. If you're looking at a specific fare and cannot find it, return to that specific website at a later time, the airfare may have changed. Airlines change their ticket prices, sometimes, thousands of time per day, therefore, you'll want to check back on a regular basis.

It's also important to delete the cookies on your computer after looking at airline ticket prices on the web. If you don't a "cookie" may remember the last pricing; therefore, you won't get an update price schedule.

It does pay to search on a daily basis, sometimes conducting your search several times a day until you're satisfied with the ticket price.

Also note, some airlines may charge for an aisle seat. That is the current talk at the present time, to include an additional fee for more leg room, like the aisle seat or exit row seat. Northwest Airlines is first to implement such a charge, look for more airlines following.

The allowable weight of your check-in luggage is going through changes, this will definitely ad additional fees onto your overall airline ticket prices. Northwest recently changed their weight restrictions from 70 pounds to 50 pounds per bag. Alaska Airlines has already implemented this weight restriction.

Getting the most out of your airline miles is often overlook by the traveler. If you're planning on a vacation, to or from the Pacific Northwest, take advantage of your frequent flyer miles BUT use them wisely.

Carriers are now less likely to give away those free upgrades, like first class seating. If you want to travel romantic style in first class you'll have to pay for it with either cash or use an excessive amount of airline miles.

Frequent flyer miles was initially constructed for the purpose off gaining loyalty with an airline; however, "times have changed". Airlines have partnered with a host of other airline companies and individuals are primarily looking for the best ticket deal rather than get some airline miles.

Flying first class to your destination is fun and recommended; however, flying first class does come with a cost...and substantial at that! A first class seat to Europe could cost upwards of $7,000 while a coach ticket could cost $1200. Using your airline mileage could cost you upwards of 90,000 frequent flyer miles for a first class seat.

You do have a couple of options in obtaining first class seats at a relatively discounted price. One, purchase coach tickets then upgrade using your miles. You'll obtain more miles by purchasing the coach tickets and you will not have to shell out the large amount of miles for upgrading that are typically required for first class.

Secondly, if you don't want to use your miles or you don't have enough, you can purchase an upgrade. Go ahead and purchase coach tickets then purchase the additional upgrade to first class. You'll also have to watch the various restrictions for upgrades. Some airlines do not allow upgrades with certain coach tickets. Do a little homework before purchasing the coach tickets.

Also, some airlines have increased the upgrade fares. We don't want you shelling out money thinking you can get a later upgrade to first class when in reality it may cost you an arm and a leg. Again, do little homework with the airline you've chosen to fly with.

The Bottom Line, buy coach and use your airline miles for upgrades, contact us with your comments.

Planning on a flight?...Use caution when drinking airplane water. Think about it, do you drink bottled water, or do you have a water filter on your kitchen facet? If that's the case, why would you want to drink water from a storage tank on an airplane?

In 2004 there were more than 30 aircraft the Environmental Protection Agency deemed as having contaminated water systems with coliforms or fecal bacteria. Knowing this finding sends up a "red flag". Can the EPA monitor every aircraft? Realistically, no, the EPA cannot sample and report on every aircraft. Therefore, it comes to the responsibility of the passengers, know what you're drinking.

Granted, U.S. based carriers have stepped up their efforts to monitor and provide safe airplane water. Carriers are to report any contamination to regulators and find the source of contamination. Airlines can be find more than $27,000 for each violation under the new EPA agreements.

We highly recommend that you drink bottled water, and use caution when ice is included in your drink. Do you know where the ice came from? Until you know it's ice from a "clean water" source, we suggest that you get use to drinking warm drinks...it may save you from a possible illness.

Heading to Fidalgo Island? You're in for a treat. Home to Anacortes, the famous San Juan Island Ferry Dock and the spectacular, yet not very famous Washington Park.

Washington Park consists of rolling hills, rock outcrops overlooking picturesque vantage points and a series of trails for the hiker, bicycler or scenic car drive. You'll feel like you're already in the remote area of the San Juan Islands, without riding a ferry to a nearby island.

Washington Park is situated right in a "Rain Shadow". It's a unique location, the rain typically passes yielding an ideal place for you to stroll year round. Trails meander throughout the park, passing across forested hills and grassy knolls over looking the pristine waters below.

You'll have the ability to look across Rosario Strait, see the various Islands in the nearby distance, perhaps catch a glimpse of a passing Killer Whale or watch the harbor seals lounging about the giant kelp beds.

Surrounding the park is the 2.2 paved road, great for a bicycle trip, drive, or easy walk. Throughout the drive are numerous scenic locations, vistas and ideal places for the afternoon picnic. Getting to the park is easy. Exiting off of I-5 towards Anacortes, Fidalgo Island, follow State 20 West, obviously heading West. You'll drive a few miles passing farmland. Once you cross the bridge, with the oil refineries on the right, you're nearly there.

Turn right on Commercial Ave, left onto 12th Street and follow the signs to Washington Park. You'll drive by a few stores in Anacortes, Safeway, etc., be sure to pick up some "goodies" for you venture into Washington Park.

Having the appropriate travel information before heading off onto your journey can be very beneficial. Seattle weather varies, nearly from hour to hour, especially during the winter and spring months. To avoid any potential delays, simply make a phone call to your travel airline and check for flight times. You'll save a lot of aggravation.

If you're not sure of what articles you can bring in you carry-on luggage, check with the Transportation & Security Administration.

Be sure to bring ID with you for domestic travel and the appropriate ID for foreign travel. If you're traveling to Canada you'll need some proof of citizenship. Granted, this could change at any given time, check with your airline or the U.S. State Department.

Why a Romantic Weekend Getaway?...With over 25-years of marriage, I have found that spending quality time together with my wife, Maria, is needed to grow and enhance our relationship.

For this romantic treat I surprised my wife with a romantic weekend getaway to Victoria Canada. We've visited Victoria in the past, toured the numerous historical and exciting attractions; however, this time our focus was "us"...simply spending quality time together without disruptions. We were not on any time schedules, no job related deadlines to meet and no kids pulling us this way or that. We were "Free" to follow our "hearts desire".

This was an excellent choice for my wife and I to have the opportunity to experience a romantic weekend getaway together, away from the routines of life. Before embarking on this wonderful occasion, we organized the babysitting for our four kids, finalized various weekend projects and easily arranged our transportation with accommodations to Victoria Canada.

Getting to Victoria Canada couldn't be any easier. You can choose your mode of transportation, either airplane or boat; we chose to travel by boat aboard the famous Victoria Clipper. It's fast, comfortable, convenient and provides an appealing atmosphere traveling across the water. Life couldn't be any easier. The Victoria Clipper also offers all-inclusive getaway packages including: transportation, accommodations and even sight-seeing opportunities.

Getting to the "Clipper" is effortless. We simply had a relative drop us off at the Clipper dock located on Pier 69 along Seattle's waterfront, 2701 Alaskan Way, Seattle, WA 98121 (206) 448-5000. If you're driving and need parking, that's simple too, check out the parking facility the Clipper recommends.

We arrived an hour before the scheduled boarding. This gave us ample time to check-in our bag, pick up our boarding passes and proceed through security. Be sure to bring the appropriate identification. Check with the Victoria Clipper before leaving your home if you have any questions regarding acceptable identification. You don't want to miss the boat!

Once you've gone through all of the check-in procedures, boarding the vessel is a simple process. Boarding is based on a first-come, first-served basis. If you're one of the first passengers through check-in, you'll likely board first. The benefit?...You get to pick your seat. There are no assigned seats for this romantic weekend getaway, you pick what's right for you.

Once we found seats, most appropriate for us, we simply relaxed as the boarding process continued for the remaining passengers. We checked out the small "Duty-Free Shop", purchased a breakfast basket and visited the self-service complimentary coffee bar. With our food and drinks in hand, we nestled back for a relaxing voyage up Puget Sound to Victoria Canada, the beginning of our romantic weekend getaway.

The trip takes approximately 2½ hours; however, time goes very quickly. We were easily engaged in conversation with the Clipper's crew, explored the aft outside deck and occasionally visited one of the several restrooms. I was especially impressed with the stability of the vessel. It was smoother than flying most commercial airliners. If you're anxious about boarding a vessel, the Clipper will most likely take all of your anxious feeling away. Most of the time, you will not even know you're moving.

Arriving into Victoria is exciting. Peering through the windows as we entered the port area created a magical sensation. After all, this was our destination for a romantic weekend getaway. We waited patiently in anticipation as we disembarked the Victoria Clipper, collected our piece of luggage, passed through customs and gingerly left the dock as the city of Victoria unfolded before our eyes.

The prominent landmarks caught our attention as we walked from the Clipper Dock. The Parliament Buildings and the Royal B.C. Museum were like a guiding light showing us the way into the heart of Victoria. Our venue of romance was all around us as we further entered into our romantic weekend getaway.

Traveling with one piece of luggage made our ten minute walk to the Victoria Marriott Inner Harbour Hotel a breeze. To the suggestion of my wife, we utilized a compact over-night travel bag on wheels. This is the way to travel, light with ease, no heavy bags slung over the shoulder.

The Marriott is easy to find. You can walk, as we did, or take a taxi. We preferred walking, it added to the magical mystery of exploring this romantic setting. Pick up a free map from the Clipper and you'll find the Marriott just behind the notable Fairmont Empress Hotel, 728 Humboldt Street.

The Marriott offers some fabulous accommodation packages, ask the hotel for more specifics, 250-480-3800. Of course, we chose the Romantic Package, and the Marriott delivers! After our brief check-in, with the help of the courteous hotel staff, we pursued to our Romantic Suite on the 14th floor overlooking Victoria's Inner Harbor.

Wow!!! What an elegant suite, all prepared with the romantic touch, adding the essentials to our romantic weekend getaway.

We were especially impressed with the elegant furniture, beautiful decorations, accompanied with a gorgeous picturesque back drop of Victoria's Inner Harbor added a sensual suggestion. The surroundings were just the needed touch to create the proper romantic atmosphere for us.

We were mesmerized by the romantic affect with the room's preparation. A waiting chilled bottle of wine consorting with chocolate covered strawberries only amplified the romantic setting.

We took a moment to savor the time as we melted away on the relaxing couch gazing across Victoria's Inner Harbor. The adjacent large bedroom's soft, warm bedding simply added to the romantic environment, providing our romantic weekend getaway with a stimulating touch. The Marriott had prepared it all, even the Romantic Aroma Therapy Soaps.

We found it very appealing to simply enjoy the romantic arrangement; there was no rush to engage in the typical tourist activities, just relax in the wonderful romantic Marriott surroundings.

The weather wasn't the most conducive for thoroughly exploring Victoria, but that didn't matter to us, we could spend quality time together in a lush romantic setting, right in our hotel suite. It was simply wonderful.

We also relished time together soothing ourselves in the Marriott's hot tub and pool. This was a great opportunity to simply kick back and relax. Adjacent to the pool is the exercise room. Here we got our blood flowing with the use of the new exercise equipment. I was thoroughly impressed. The amenities throughout the Marriott are clean, fairly new and inviting.

After several hours of relaxation in our magnificent room we headed out to explore the romantic wonderlands of Victoria. Strolling hand-in-hand along the waterfront, looking at the glistening Victoria lights dance on the waters reflection, made for the most favorable romantic occasion. We ambled up and down the streets of Victoria, no hurry, no worries, just enjoying each other's company.

Our meandering through Victoria's streets put us at the front door of a local restaurant, The Tapa Bar. The restaurant's outside looked very appealing and inviting. We couldn't resist exploring this cultural delight. Tapas are small assortments of food, typical in Spain, and mouth watering.

We decided to order the "Tapa Platter For Two", fully loaded with a broad assortment of Latin spice, Spanish influence, and a dash of Cuban, South American and Mexican delight. The food was prepared by the specialty chef, Armanda, in the spacious open kitchen. We were caught in amazement watching Armanda prepare the dish with such delicacy. And even more so, the food was delicious, a highly recommended treat for the romantic adventurer and adding the specialty spice to your romantic weekend getaway. You can find the restaurant in the historic Trounce Alley, just off Government Street.

For those who want to sliver away, catch a glimmering view of the Lighted Government Buildings from your romantic suite, you can! AND, instead of venturing out into the heart of Victoria, the Marriott provides elegant meals directly to your suite through their astounding "Fire & Water Fish and Chop House Restaurant".

You have the ability to enjoy each others company, romantic style, eating a fabulous meal without venturing anywhere. And, you'll find the menu items are very affordable. A highly recommend treat, and added touch to your romantic weekend getaway.

As time would have it, our romantic weekend getaway could not last forever, we had to make the return voyage back to Seattle aboard the Clipper. Our departure time was late in the afternoon so we had ample time to check out of the Marriott, stroll the streets of Victoria and pick up a few gifts for the kids.

Upon boarding the Clipper for your departure to Seattle, it's recommend to arrive an hour early. Similar to your departure in Seattle, you'll check in your luggage, pass through customs and board the Clipper. It's a pretty simple task, just abide with all the security rules.

Our voyage back to Seattle allowed time to recount our romantic time together. The moments we shared in Victoria was like "time in a bottle", it was priceless and appeared endless. Our short time away seemed like days, for we had ventured miles together into a Magical Romantic Wonderland.

We've found it's easy to get caught into the "circle of life" without "smelling the roses". Our time on this planet is short; therefore, it only makes sense to appreciate all that is around us, especially those we love. So, we stopped and "smelled the roses" with our romantic weekend getaway, what about you? Mark Twain says it best;

Tag Entertainment...Use CAUTION...What does movie production have to do with travel? A lot actually. We're an advocate for the consumer, passing on information that can offer assistance in the travel-related world. The production of travel documentaries can provide opportunities for many seeking various types of travel and, as an investor into a movie can hinder ones ability to travel or possibly enhance it.

Let me further explain. In 2003 we were approached by Tag Entertainment to invest into a movie production, "Santa Trap" as a Limited Partnership. We did some research and found the company existed, focused on the production of family based films and we thought perhaps a small investment into a family movie production would be worthwhile. Therefore, we invested a small amount of money.

Over time we built, what we thought was a trusting relationship with the sales person representing Tag Entertainment. We had numerous conversations and he instilled in us the honest values that Tag Entertainment upheld to.

After building a trusting relationship with us, this sales person then proceeded to discuss a new film production, "Black Beauty". This sales individual said that John Travolta was going to produce the movie and possibly have an appearance in the movie. This sounded like a favorable movie to partner with, especially if the Travolta's are behind it.

We further conversed regarding the movie, "Black Beauty", and was led to believe the movie was a major motion picture for the big screen. More and more it sounded like a great and credible opportunity for an investment. And, after-all, it appeared that Tag Entertainment had the same moral values that we had, family.

The sales individual stated that Lou Pearlman was teaming up with Tag Entertainment. Lou Pearlman is very wealthy and knows the entertainment business giving even more credibility to Tag.

After several weeks of conversation with the sales person we dived in, investing a large sum of money into the movie "Black Beauty".

A few weeks later we learned that the sales person we dealt with had a falling out with Tag Entertainment and left to work with another movie production company. This threw up a "Red Flag" for us, what had we gotten into to?

We further checked onto the production of "Santa Trap" and found out that the movie was released even before we made our initial investment. We were led to believe the movie was in the production stage. Apparently it did not do very well and was a "made for TV movie". We were under the impression it was in production for the "Big Screen". A BIG mistake for not digging deeper and relying on the information provided by the sales person.

Since 2003 we contacted Tag several times about "Black Beauty". Apparently there were many delays before production and after production. We recently found out it was a "made for TV movie". Again we were led to believe it was for the "Big Screen". We also discovered the Travolta's apparently had nothing to do with this film and Lou Pearlman's involvement with Tag was with one movie production, not the company.

At the present time we haven't received any returns from our investment nor have received our initial investment. We were recently informed that we will only receive returns after the movie makes money. In 2004 Tag went Public, the stock ticker is TAGE. The performance is shaky and declining.

What happens in the future? We've been approached by other production companies to invest in their movies; however, we learned. We will not invest another penny into a movie production unless we produce and direct the movie ourselves. (Someday we'd like to produce and direct a documentary.)

There are more minute details we can get into however, this is not the forum for that. We just wanted to alert you of our experience. If we had to do it all over again we would never invest into a movie production, there are too many sound opportunities out there.

Whatever the case, through our travels we've encountered a few people who were turned down on buying investment properties or an RV simply because their credit report was incorrect. Apparently they had paid all their bills on-time and thought their credit history was impeccable; however, the report told otherwise.

Lesson learned, get a free online credit report today and make sure your credit history matches the credit report. If you wait, you just may have waited too long.

We received a free online credit report and noticed a couple of open credit cards listed, we weren't aware of those cards. As a result, we contacted the noted credit card companies and canceled the accounts. It's highly recommend that you clean up the unnecessary clutter on your credit report, like open credit cards that you don't use.

Don't be surprised if you notice an error on your report. The U.S. Public Internet Research Group noted that some 79% of the reports contain errors and some 25% are serious enough to hinder you in obtaining a loan or a possible job. That should be enough to get you to take advantage of a free online credit report.

To begin the process of getting your free online credit report click here or call 877-322-8228. It takes about 5-minutes and you'll get a copy of the report to print out.

If you notice discrepancies and want to clean up the report, you'll have to contact each of the 3-National Credit Reporting agencies; Equifax, 800-685-1111; TransUnion, 800-916-8800; and Experian, 888-397-3742. You'll have to follow their specific guidelines to challenge the error. It will also make sense to contact the creditor too, such as the credit card company.

The Fair Credit Reporting Act has made all of this possible, the opportunity clean up your credit report. In the cleaning process if the agencies have not acted promptly, feel free to contact the Federal Trade Commission at 877-382-4357. You can file a complaint and they may offer you some suggestions.

The Seattle Weather says more rain insight. So far, as of 1/11/06, we're at 24 consecutive days of rain. That means we're now tied for the 3rd longest streak. If we can hold out for some 33 days we'll beat the all-time high of rainy days set back on 1953.

As of today, there seems to be no end in sight, the clouds keep swooping off the Pacific Ocean. What does all this wet weather mean? Some refer to it as global warming caused from human activity; however, we look at the earth as a dynamic body, it's in constant change so it's inevitable that we'll have unique weather changes.

As far as the local skiing, the conditions are looking good for a long term seek season. The problem right now is the ability to get to the ski slopes because of too much snow. Last season, 2005, we had very little snow, this season it's abundant.

This summer of 06, we should not experience ANY shortage of water. Hopefully, the water resources can remain in the reservoirs until needed, not released any earlier.

And for the upcoming Seahawks game, it's going to rain. (Perhaps they should use the Mariners Baseball Field, it has a roof.) And if the Seahawks win this game against Washington Redskins, they are one more step closer to the Super Bowl.

Are you thinking of a Portland Oregon Vacation? We recommend other destinations throughout Oregon rather than Portland. Why?...

Recently we set out on a "getaway" to Portland. Our purpose was to explore the area, utilize an economy budget and write a feature article about a "getaway" to Portland. We had one of our staff book a budget minded hotel for our family and recommend a cost-efficient restaurant nearby for our eating pleasure.

Well, here's what happened. Portland's street layout is very confusing for driving. There are 5 bridges crossing the Willamette River, 2 are Interstate and 3 are for local traffic. We chose to use the local bridges, tour about, so we could familiarize ourselves with Portland. That was a big mistake.

We were totally lost, hence we asked several people to direct us to our destination, our hotel. We received many comments regarding directions making us even for confused. And to top it off, while driving in the dark, looking earnestly for our hotel, we came upon an intersection with a light that had just turned "Yellow". Rather than come to a screeching halt I passed through the "Yellow Light" without any worry. Then all "Hell" broke lose. Lights flashed from behind and in front, we thought we had encountered a brief lightening storm but only to find out that our picture was taken.

Finally, after several attempts we found our economical hotel, the EconoLodge for our little Portland Oregon Vacation. We checked in, went to the room and experienced a ghastly odor. The room was disgusting! The carpet had a gross filth about it too. We opened the windows in hopes of bringing in fresh air. My kids refused to stay in such a filthy environment; however, I explained that we should have patience. After-all, we're exploring.

That evening we went to a nearby Chinese restaurant to try out the local cuisine. The food was plenty however, the sauces were abundant too. We all chose different menu items for the purpose of sharing. My oldest son chose a cut of meat. Everyone who ate his menu selection found themselves with an upset stomach and diarrhea. It began the next morning and lasted several days.

After a sleepless night we took upon ourselves to participate in the breakfast that comes with the room. We were shocked...In the lobby were a group of muffins, spread out on an open tray, they looked like they had been exposed to the air for days. Nevertheless, we helped ourselves to the muffins only to find them extremely stale.

Our desire was to leave Portland as soon as possible, this was not our ideal of a "Getaway". Then to top it off, when we arrived at home we received a $237 ticket for going through a "Yellow Light".

Our little Portland Oregon Vacation left us with a sleepless night in a filthy hotel, sick from food poisoning, and a $237 ticket!

Portland Oregon is not the place that welcomes visitors, if you're looking for a place to explore head over to the Oregon Coast, by-pass Portland.

We did notify EconoLodge, The Chinese Restaurant and City of Portland. The only response we received was from the EconoLodge. They said, "if we didn't like the room we should get another one and regarding the muffins, they are delivered everyday."

Fake airline tickets are small in number; however, you do want to use some "street-smarts" before purchasing an airline ticket. On a past trip that we took to Spain, we purchased a ticket out of an office in Florida. They were advertising extremely low airfares to Europe. With our knowledge in the Travel Industry we were a little reluctant; however, they assured us they purchased them at a discounted price from a wholesaler and were passing the savings on. They won our trust, we purchased the tickets thinking we had saved a bundle.

Our Experience...

We departed New York bound for Madrid with no problems. As we attempted to board for our return flight we were detained and questioned thoroughly regarding the validity of the tickets. The airline personnel said they were fake airline tickets and we were not permitted to board. They confiscated the tickets and offered us the opportunity to purchase new tickets for a different flight. This particular flight was already overbooked.

We were in utter shock, how could we be traveling on fake airline tickets? We'd paid for them! In all our years in the travel industry we never came across a fake ticket, until now. We were dumbfounded.

My wife was hysterical with the ticket agents; however, they would not issue a boarding pass. We waited anxiously at the ticket desk hoping some agent would give in to our dilemma. Just minutes before final boarding, a quite ticket agent approached us with 2-boarding passes and said, "Take them, go or you'll miss your flight". We left immediately, boarded the plane, waiting in anticipation that a flight attendant would come and ask us to leave. It wasn't until the plane was airborne did we finally feel some relief.

How is it Possible to Get Fake Airline Tickets...?

How was it possible, of all people, we were duped into getting a fake airline ticket? Even though counterfeit tickets are relatively small in number, about $4 million a year, there are some things you want to watch for when purchasing your ticket.

There is no real way to tell if your ticket is fake or not but you can take some precautions. Tickets written by hand should send a "red flag" to you. It's very unusual for a legitimate agency to issue hand written tickets. Tickets that are extremely low in price should also send the "red flag" flying. This is probably the most common, extremely low fares. If it's "too good to be true" it probably isn't true..

The way these counterfeiters work is quite simple. Usually it involves an inside person who understands the ticketing process. The counterfeiter takes a legitimate ticket and doctors it up. It may include an upgrade to first class, stop-overs, etc. The ticket appears more valuable and has often changed hands several times before finally reaching you, the buyer.

Protect Yourself...

To protect yourself from possible fake airline tickets, stay away from paper tickets because they can be doctored up. Purchase an E-Ticket, they are less vulnerable to any type of fraud and always make sure the ticket isn't underfared. It's great to save money while traveling and purchase the least expensive ticket but you also want to make sure you're not purchasing a fake airline ticket.

We've found the best sources for tickets are from Travelocity and Orbitz. They both offer extremely competitive fares and issue e-tickets protecting your travel journey from possible fraud. Be sure to read the article How To Get Low Airfares stay away from fake airline tickets.

Oregon waterfalls are numerous and spectacular. Due to the variety of weather, from the coastal rains to the dry barren grounds of Eastern Oregon, there's a waterfall that will take your breath away.

We've categorized the Oregon Falls in a Top 4 listing. There are hundreds of waterfalls throughout Oregon, therefore, we'll focus on the most spectacular.

Top 10 Oregon Waterfalls...

Watson Falls - plummets some 272 feet over a cathedral style looking cliff. The best vantage point is near the base of the falls. You'll cross over a foot bridge, however, keep going t get the best view, it's just a few more minutes. There's a nice bench to take a needed rest and enjoy the splendid romantic view.

Getting there...From Interstate-5, take the Roseburg exit to Highway 138. Head east on 138 towards Crater Lake. Drive 2.2 miles past Toketee Lake along S.R. 138 to the Fish Creek Road number 37. Turn right onto 37 heading south. Continue about 0.2 miles to the Watson Falls Picnic Ground. Follow the Watson Falls Trail number 1495.
Sahalie Falls - descends some roaring 140 feet making an incredible torrential splash. You can spend some quality time at this beautiful waterfall.

Getting there...From Interstate-5, take the Albany exit and follow Highway 20 east. At the Junction of Highway 20 and Highway 126, head south on Highway 126. Drive 5-miles and take the turn-off at the point of interest sign.
Salt Creek Falls - is a little gem in the South Cascades, plummeting some 286 feet into a spectacular gorge. These falls are just waiting for you.

Getting there...Just south of Eugene, exit from Interstate-5 onto Highway 58 heading east. When you reach Oakridge you'll drive an additional 21-miles. Park at the Salt Creek Falls turnout, there's a nice picnic area and fabulous views of the falls.
Bridal Veil Falls - spills some 249 feet in a beautiful aurora. It's beauty is soft and beckoning the romantics to look in wonder.

Getting there...follow Interstate 84 east out of Portland. Take the Troutdale exit, number 17 follow the Scenic Highway to Bridal Veil Falls.

Our DREAM JOB...Hi! I'm Craig...The Chief Editor and my wife...the inspiration behind Northwest Travel Tips and of course, the entire staff that continues researching Northwest Travel Tips for you. The following summarizes our dream job.

My wife and I have a passion for travel. We've had the fortunate opportunity to travel throughout 41 different countries and every state within the U.S. We simply love it. We later took our passion and opened a small tour company servicing the Pacific Northwest. Within 2 short years the competition grew putting us in a challenging situation. At the same time our family was growing, my wife was pregnant and we had a three year old daughter already.

Making Ends Meet...

Making ends meet was quite the challenge, especially now that the competition was eating into our marketplace. We eventually had no alternative but to down-size the tour company and look for a job. My background was geology and environment, and surprisingly it wasn't that hard to find a job. Within a couple of weeks of looking I had a job in the environmental industry.

After I was hired I mentioned to my co-workers that I'd only work at the company for about six months. After-all I had bigger dreams than to merely work a "job", I had a tour business to develop. Week after week I worked, each day thinking about the dream of independence and developing plans to escalate our tour business to newer and higher levels. Eventually the weeks turned into months, and the months turned into years.

Finally after 11 years in the environmental industry and with a family with four children, I decided enough was enough. If I was ever to fulfill my dream I had to do it now and take the plunge! I had to get out of the "job" syndrome. Mark Twains words were grinding at my heart, "Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So, throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor...Explore. Dream. Discover."

Freedom...

My wife was very supportive and understood the importance of following a dream. After-all, freedom is very important to us. Having the freedom to be involved with our kids while they're growing up is priceless. And, we found that merely working for money did not give us the freedom that we wanted. We wanted money to be the by product of our work, work that we truly enjoy and can offer some benefits to others.

Now with the hard part over, making the decision to quit my job, the door of opportunity opened wider than ever. I decided to turn in my resignation at the beginning of the year, kind of like making a new beginning. It was August, I had four months to get my act together. I must admit, I was a little nervous. I was use to getting a "pay check" every two weeks.

My wife and I discussed in length business ideas, the tour company, etc. Then, out of the blew in November of 2002, we stumbled on this company offering web sites. We nearly shrugged it off, we knew next to nothing about creating a website let alone getting it listed in the top searches on the Internet.

We reviewed our goals again and thought, perhaps the best option to continue in the travel business was to developed an online magazine about the Northwest. We new the subject very well and knew the fun we could have with it. However, we weren't quite sure how we were going to make money building a website about the Northwest.

We Found It...

We began our research into Site Build It. Our eyes began opening as we saw all of the possibilities we could do with a website, the freedom that a website could allow us. We could envision our dream job unfolding before our eyes.

So we jumped into Site Build It at the end of 2002, quit my job in January of 2003 and never looked back. We were living our dream job and following the advice of Mark Twain, "Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So, throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor...Explore. Dream. Discover."

We began first developing a site about the Northwest, our home, Northwest Travel Tips. Here's the targeted traffic the site generated at its beginnings: December 2002 we had 1403 visitors, January 03 - 2622 visitors, February 03 - 3184, March 03 - 3728, April 03 - 5615, May 03- 7246 AND it KEEPS GROWING! What does that mean, targeted traffic coming to our site, money in our pockets yielding FREEDOM!

January of 2005 we decided to expand our travel experiences to include the world, so we launched Luxury Romantic Vacations. And it's just that, all about romantic vacations. And of course, my wife is the romantic one, so we decided to combine Love & Travel together; therefore, launching another site Love Quotes For You.

The tide for us has changed and there's no looking back, only forward to what the future holds as we continue to live our dream job. Occasionally I run into one of my old co-workers. They're amazed and say that we are "lucky". We don't think it was luck, oh perhaps stumbling on Site Build It was a little luck, but we took what SiteBuildit had to offer and simply implemented it. Anyone with a dream, desire and a few goals can do the same thing.

Why?...

We were asked why we chose to build a site about travel. It was very simple, we had an interest in it and we know the material. We have other interests too, like boating, hiking, scrapbooking, and cooking and have thought about building websites about those topics too. We'll see what we do as we continue to live our dream job.

And I can truly say that we've found our dream job. It's so much fun, it's not even work!

To us, FREEDOM is one of the top reasons why we chose to go into business. We found a "job" just wasn't able to give us the kind of freedom we wanted. Also, if we worked hard, we wanted that hard work to come back to us in our business and not building someone else's business.

Seattle has grown into a city of extraordinary sights, sounds and smells. The sights are numerous and awe-inspiring. The sounds are the many bells, horns and whistles from draw bridges to vessels making headway to the open waters.
And the smells, the aroma of fresh brewed coffee. The Emerald City has become the coffee Mecca of the world, the launching pad and testing grounds for the infamous Starbucks Coffee.
This pioneer settlement started out as a logging town, shipping logs down the coast to San Francisco and soon received its "claim-to-fame" during the Klondike Gold Rush (Alaska Gold Rush) of 1897.
The cry of the "Klondike Gold" could be heard across the world. It was July of 1897 that gold seekers from every corner of the earth descended on the small pioneer town. Tens of thousands of Yukon bound individuals poured through the now ever-growing city.
This small pioneer town literally jumpstarted it's reputation as a regional trade center as the Northwest's economy grew from the gold seekers.
The Chamber of Commerce didn't hesitate to take advantage of the opportunity. They promoted the growing city as the "only place" to outfit for the Yukon. Sales of materials soared to $25 million by early 1898. Shopkeepers were stacking their goods 10-feet deep on the storefront boardwalks. The Yukon stampeders bought supplies, lodging and boarded ships heading for the Yukon goldfields.
Pioneer Square…
You can explore some of the historic gold rush days by exploring Pioneer Square. Parking is a challenge in the Pioneer Square area; however, head west towards Puget Sound, you'll find ample parking along the waterfront near Jackson, Main and Washington streets. Walking to Pioneer Square is only blocks away, in fact, if you like walking; downtown is not that big, you can walk everywhere. Also, the buses are free in the downtown area so you can easily get around.
Pioneer Square is located at the intersection of 1st Ave.. and Yesler Way. If you're not familiar with the streets, ask anyone, they'll point you in the right direction. Before strolling around Pioneer Square we recommend that you check out the visitors center at 117 South Main Street, 2-blocks north of the football stadium.
At the visitors center ask about the walking tours and other scheduled programs. You can also see exhibits and programs telling the story of the Emerald City's crucial role as the staging area for the Klondike Gold Rush.
Pikes Place Market…
Almost as old as the city, Pikes Place Market is arguably one of the city's most popular landmarks. It's the oldest continually operating farmers market in the country. Dating back to the 1800's, farmers from the area brought their goods to the market to barter and sell. The market grew over the years into the most unusual host of stores the world has ever known. As you meander around this colossal of storefronts, you'll find them in the most unusual nooks and crannies.
It was recently the City wanted to shut down the Market. City Fathers had other ideas for the land. However, a strong group of protesters emerged to keep this historical site open. Thanks to them, we can continue to explore this fabulous section of historical culture.
Pikes Place Market is located on the northern portion of Alaskan Way, along the waterfront, up a block on 1st Ave.. Parking is difficult at the Market; however, if you're willing to walk a few blocks you can find ample parking along the waterfront. All in all, we recommend that you park your car and walk around. You can experience that much more.
Seattle's Waterfront…
Between Pioneer Square and Pikes Place Market is the waterfront. It's truly spectacular. If you leave the Pioneer Square area, you can walk north along the waterfront towards Pikes Place Market. You'll walk past a number of piers, the numbers getting larger as you walk northward.
Pier 59, the now Waterfront Park. It was this location that spurred the Alaska Gold Rush. This is where the ship Portland docked with 68 prospectors whose cargoes of gold launched the Klondike Gold Rush.
Continue northward and you'll walk by the waterfront fire station and the ferry docks. If you have some time, hop on one of the ferries for a ride to Bremerton or Winslow. It'll give you a good perspective of Seattle as you pass Alki Point to the south and a grand view of Seattle looking to the east.
As you continue to stroll northward along the waterfront you'll reach the Aquarium. The aquarium is a door to the marine life in Puget Sound. Kids have the ability to spend hours watching these diverse fish move sleekly about in their tank homes.
Making your way further northward along the waterfront, there are several specialty shops that will likely lure you into their domain. They offer a host of gift items that display the essence of Seattle.
Feel free to rest your feet at one of the many fish & chip bars. They are plentiful and offer great tasting fish, especially with the malt vinegar sprinkled over the crust of the fish…yummy!

Cross the street, heading east, is Pikes Place Market. You can get some exercise by walking up the stairs or utilize the elevator and glide up the bluff. At the top the door is open to explore the vast specialty shops of Pikes Place Market.
Seattle's Space Needle...
The most prominent figure in the Emerald City is obviously the Space Needle. It's the Eye Of The Needle that put Seattle on the map. Without the "Needle" the city's history would have taken a whole different turn.
In the 1950's businessmen and the city council were looking at avenues to attract people to the Emerald City. The idea of a World's Fair sparked the interest of the council. Other cities throughout the world were having great success promoting their cities with a "World’s Fair". The Emerald City decided to hop on the bandwagon.
The theme of the city's World's Fair was the 21st Century, what the future holds. The Space Needle was the Fair's centerpiece. Protruding some 600 feet above Seattle's skyline, it served as the beacon of light beaconing others to come to Seattle. And come they did. The fair, opened in 1962 and was a great success. It not only brought people but it also brought revenue.
While most cities throughout the world lost money with their fairs, The Emerald City made a profit. And to this day, you might say the "Fair" is still in existence.
When you visit the Space Needle you'll see many remnants from the 1962 World's Fair that are still in operation such as: the Monorail, Science Center, The International Building, and of course, the Space Needle.

If you have a vehicle and want to get some fabulous views either to capture on film or simple enjoy, we'll share with you some kept secrets of where to see the city up close and personal.
Queen Ann View Point…From the Seattle Center (where the Space Needle is) make your way to Queen Anne Ave., it's west of the Center. Drive north on Queen Anne, head up the log and drudgerous hill. Turn left on Highland, not quite at the top of the hill. Drive about 3-blocks and you'll see, to the south, a small vista point over-looking the Space Needle. It also makes for a great view of Mt. Rainier too.
Belvedere View Point Park…From I-5 North or South, OR Highway 99 North or South, head west on the West Seattle Freeway. Take the Admiral Way exit, it's about 1-mile past the bridge that crosses over Harbor Island. Drive north on Admiral Way for about 1½ miles, you'll see the Vista Point Park on the east side of the road.
Alki Point…Take the West Seattle Freeway and exit at Harbor Ave SW. Drive north following the water. You'll see many vantage points that make for fabulous photo shots along this drive.
Washington State Ferries…Hop aboard one of the ferries departing downtown Seattle and enjoy the breath-taking views from the stern section.

Bend Oregon is a high desert paradise with loads of history. We won't go into the details of the history, check out one of the many museums in the area, they are fascinating. We'll focus on what's happening today and what you can expect when you visit the Bend area.

The Unique Landscape...

As you approach the Central Oregon area, in particular Bend, you'll notice the landscape is dotted with peaks, buttes and cinder cones. About ten million years ago, the landscape was alive with numerous volcanic eruptions. It was literally fire and brimstone.

Today the fire is gone and left behind is the unique landscape that makes the Bend Oregon area an outdoor paradise with green trees, flowing rivers, pristine lakes, picturesque mountains and an abundant amount of things to do.

From Pilot Butte 4,139 feet...

On the eastern side of Bend Oregon, you can gaze to the West and see the Cascade Mountain Range that sprawls from British Columbia to California. Piercing skywards you'll see the Three Sisters Mountains, Broken Top and Mount Bachelor.

To the East you'll get a glimpse of the High Desert where the West's largest Juniper Forest reigns.

Look Northward and you'll catch a view of the Deschutes River. Now this river is one big fish hatchery, world-class fishing opportunities.

Set your eyes Southward and you'll see a vastness of pine trees until they reach the horizon.

Getting to Bend...

Getting to Bend is relatively easy year-round. We've only traveled to the Bend area by vehicle. You have a variety of options as the Bend area continues to grow. You can fly-in on a commercial flight or private plane. Go by Amtrak train, Greyhound bus or for the more adventurous bike or hike in. Nevertheless, for those who want to make it here will do so.

You have a variety of options for lodging...

Things to do in the Bend area are countless...

You'll definitely have to check out the Cascade Lakes Highway. It's an 87-mile scenic drive in the High Desert area around Bend Oregon.

While in town visit the High Desert Museum. There's mounds of both indoor and outdoor exhibits. Kids love this one! You'll need at least a good half day for this museum. Give them a call 541-382-4754.

And if you like to see how the people lived in this area in the 1800's and early 1900's then hop on over to the County Historical Museum. Here's their number to call them, 541-389-1813.

Skiing...

You got to come here and ski at the Mount Bachelor Ski Resort, Bend Oregon. This is a Winter Paradise. The sun shines soooo much and the snow conditions are usually exceptional. It's a great place for the beginner all the way to the expert. They typically open from November to June. Give them a call 800-829-2442.

A Luxury Cruise Deal...Just 10 Tips Away

With over 20 plus years as Travel/Tour Operators, we've assembled the most important tips to getting a luxury cruise deal. You can implement them right away and begin enjoying, not only your savings, but a wonderful luxury cruise.

We're also the editors of Luxury Romantic Vacations, an advocate for the traveler; therefore, we reveal the facts. The following information is for you to use, feel free to refer your friends and relatives to this article. We truly enjoying sharing valuable information, especially offering some advice that may help you save your hard-earned money. There are many other places to spend it.

Here we go...to your luxury cruise deal...

Organize your cruise for the "off-season". Stay away from the "peak season". If you can schedule your time even a few weeks before or after the peak season you'll save substantially. For example, The Alaska Cruise will have it's peak season during July and August. If you can sail before or after those dates you'll save.
Decide which cruise line you want to sail on. Some travel agencies tend to push a specific cruise line for various reasons, one reason is the agency receives a higher commission. Norwegian Cruise Lines, for the most part, will yield a better savings. Do a little homework and check out the amenities on each vessel to make sure it meets your expectations.
Don't be miss-led when you see advertised specials such as "Luxury Cruise Deal", $599". These advertisements are usually for off-season and do not include port fees and taxes.
Get a cruise quote that includes port fees and taxes. If the agency is unable to give that information to you then find another agency. Your interest should be the bottom line, the total cost with NO Hidden Fees. Port fees can run a couple hundred dollars per passenger, just be aware.
Unless you plan on spending a lot of time in your cabin, get an inside cabin. An inside cabin, without a window, is by far the cheapest. The drawback to an inside cabin, you'll never know what time of day it is sense no "day light" comes into your room. Make sure to have a clock.
Cabin rates are typically based on a 2-person occupancy. In other words, the first 2-people in the cabin will pay the full-fare, additional people will pay 1/2 the fare. If you plan on having more than 2-people in a cabin, make sure you are NOT paying full fare for the extra 2-people. If so, find another agency.
Cruise insurance is often recommended by the agency when booking your cruise. Don't purchase cruise insurance from a travel agency, get it from an insurance company. You'll not only save money but you'll probably get a better policy too. We recommend the insurance because with the correct policy you are covered for trip cancellation either on your part or the cruise line, medical and luggage.
Cruising with a group does not always save you money on your cruise. If you are cruising with a group because you want to save money, think again, you may not be saving at all. The organizer of your group, if the group consists of 8-cabins, will usually get the cruise for free. They are the true savers. You may think you're getting a luxury cruise deal, but it may not be the case at all.
Check out your Sunday paper's travel section long before you cruise. It'll give you an idea of what the market is like.
We highly recommend Cruises Only. They are the world's largest cruise agency and many travel agencies use them, including the famous Best Fares. They offer the discount luxury cruise because they purchase "bulk" tickets directly from the cruise lines.

When we travel to Seaside Oregon, we have our kids with us. Therefore, it's important that we give them the best learning and enjoyable experience as possible. This in turn gives us the best experience. We look for opportunities that we can all enjoy.

Seaside Oregon is known for it's aquarium, the Seaside Aquarium.. It's provided a place of attraction for over 60 years and great for both kids and adults. You'll have the opportunity to feed the seals and see many of the sea-creatures who've made their homes in the aquarium. Contact the aquarium for directions or more information: 503-738-6211.

Seaside Oregon offers other fascinating attractions: bumper cars, a carousel ride, kite flying and bike riding. Just walk through town and you'll find the many wonderful options to choose from.

For the adventurous ones, Seaside Oregon offers: hikes in the rainforest, bird watching, whale watching, beach hikes and camping.

Take a break from the beach and take the kids to the Children's Nature Museum. This is a hands-on children's museum. There are exhibits of: reptiles, birds, mammals and insects. It's very interesting for both kids and adults. Give them a call, 503-738-4146.

The indoor fun is outrageous too. Shop till you drop through the many Specialty Shops and Factory Outlet Center. You'll also get your fill with the many fine restaurants specializing in a variety of options; seafood, bakeries, Italian, Chinese, just to name a few.

Are you a golfer? Look no more! Seaside Oregon has it. Check out Albertson's Golf Range, 503-717-0623. Here's Oregon's oldest Golf course, since 1892, and open year round. Gearhart Golf Links, 503-738-3538. If you want a nice 9-hole, go to the Seaside Golf Club, 503-738-5261.

The summer is obviously the busiest time of the year at Seaside Oregon. The other season's offer great opportunities too from the get-away bargains to watching the winter storms. We like Seaside Oregon during all parts of the year.

During the winter our private Resort Campground offers a lot of activities for the kids, and us, when the weather gets really rough. When the weather permits we wander off to the beach and engage in all sorts of activities: kite flying, sand castle building and watching the pounding surf. Bring your kites, toys and golf equipment.

Oh I almost forgot...catch a ride on Seaside's streetcar for a grand tour of the city. It'll give you a great glimpse of the city before embarking off to a variety of adventures. It's just a rubber-tired trolley. You can find it on Avenue "U" or ask anyone.

Seaside Promenade Hike...

Like to hike?...then take the scenic Seaside Oregon Promenade Hike. It's a 3.5 mile loop hike with no elevation gain. Begin at the "Turnaround". It's a small circular plaza overlooking the beach. Follow the signs on Highway 101 to "Seaside Downtown". Get on Broadway and follow it west to the Promenade. If you are luck you can find street parking otherwise park in the City Parking Lot on the left as you travel west.

Once parked make your way over to the actual Promenade. A statue of Lewis and Clark begins your hike. Head north from the statue along the Promenade. You'll walk on the 15-foot wide paved walkway passing downtown hotels and the grassy little dunes. Two blocks into your hike you'll pass the Seaside Oregon Aquarium. Shortly after you'll see the cottages for the early 1900's.

A little historical side note - the cottages were a great place for the Portlandites to spend some quality time at. Seaside Oregon was known as the end of the railroad line in the early 1900's. Many people from Portland Oregon would hop the train to the end of the line at Seaside Oregon on the week-ends. They could travel round-trip for $0.25.

At 12th Avenue the Promenade ends. Walk to the left on the dunes, northward. You'll soon reach a solitude beach. Walk along the beach. In the distance you'll see the Light House on Tillamook Rock.

The beach will end at the mouth of the Necanicum River. You can walk up the little grassy hill and continue northwards to the end of the Necanicum estuary. You'll find this a remarkable quaint spot, worth the visit.

To return, you can re-trace your steps or simply walk on the grassy hill into town. Walk along the various streets, passing shops until you reach Broadway. Take Broadway towards the Promenade where your car is parked.

Seaside City Parks...

Want a break with the Kids?...visit one of Seaside's City Parks. There's a wide variety of recreational activities from picnicking, swimming, fishing and skate boarding. We like the Necanicum Marine Park. It's between Broadway and 1st Avenue. There's a public boat ramp, fishing dock, picnic tables, restrooms, and free summer concert series.

Another favorite park of ours is, Broadway Park, 1140 E. Broadway. The park has an indoor swimming pool, hot tub, water slides, picnic tables, basketball and tennis courts, baseball field and more.

The History Behind the Light...

Heceta Head Light House has it's original Fresnel Lens, after all these years. This light house is another original class of beauty staked along the Oregon Coast. It all began when the Spanish explorer, Don Bruno de Heceta sailed along Oregon's Coast. Little did he know an outcrop of land would be named after him, Heceta Head.

Congress was busy in the later 1800's authorizing monies for light house stations throughout the U.S. Again, they appropriated the money, $80,000, for the land purchase and construction of the Light House. ($80,000 in the later 1800's was no "chump change".)
Light Houses were an investment into the maritime industry, a necessity for safe travel of cargo and passengers. Finally, in 1889, the land was purchased and construction began. (It actually took nearly $180,000 to complete the project. In today's dollars that could rise above $3,000,000.)

Due to severe weather, lots of blasting and clearing for the preparation of the light house, construction was completed in August of 1893; however, the light house was still lacking its lens. It wasn't until the end of 1893 the NEW Fresnel Lens arrived from France. This lens was a piece of art. It had a mechanism that allowed the light to shine a beam of light out to sea 21-miles and flashed white for 8-seconds during every 1-minute interval. This was technology advancing itself along the Oregon Coast.

Also take note, there was no Highway 101 to transport supplies along the coast. Supplies reached their destinations either directly by ship or a road had to be built. Building a road through rugged terrain is no simple task. It took weeks.

Finally, all of the pieces came together, the lens; the lamp and the Heceta Head Light House shined its beam of light out to sea on March 30, 1894. The 56-foot tower on top of Heceta Head allowed the beam of light to protrude over 205-feet above the pounding surf. This height, and brightness of light from the Fresnel Lens, enabled the beam of light to travel 21-miles out to sea.

Due to the remoteness of the light house, many times during the year the road from Florence was impassable. The keepers simply waited it out for supplies. During calm seas, a vessel could make it's way to Heceta Head and off-load supplies but calm seas were a rarity.

The Keepers were creative, growing their own vegetables and hunting was a needed past time to support themselves and families that lived on the premises.

Outside of providing food for the table, the Keepers responsibilities were on a daily basis, clean the glass on the lens, polish the lamp and service the light-flashing mechanism. If you've ever burned kerosene before, you know the soot it can leave behind. The glass on the lens, after a night of burning, would build up with soot. It was imperative the glass was cleaned daily; otherwise, the beam of light was restricted.

The early 1900's began the construction of highway 101. There were sections of road built between towns. It wasn't until 1932 that a passable roadway led into Heceta Head. Shortly, thereafter, in 1932 electricity came to the area. Soon, the light bulb replaced the dirty fuel lamp and an electric motor replaced the flashing mechanical mechanism.

During World War II, Heceta Head Light House was used as a sea search area. Troops moved in, constantly surveying the Pacific for Japanese vessels.

After the war, the Light House became quiet again. July 20, 1963, the light house became fully automated. The keepers were a thing of the past, a legend.

Over the years, restoration projects were underway by various groups. Finally in 1993 the Coast Guard finished the complete restoration project.

Get Your Camera Ready...

Heceta Head Light House makes a great photograph. There are several vantage points near and around Florence. To get to the Light House, follow highway 101 towards Florence, look for Heceta Head State Park. From Florence, drive 13 miles north on Hwy 101. You'll get to the Light House Scenic Viewpoint. You'll see the most powerful beacon along the Oregon Coast, the Heceta Head Light House, and a popular vantage point for photographers. It's worth every minute.

Experience The Magic...

Now, if you want to experience some magic, visit the Heceta Head Light House at night. Guest's who stay at the Light House are given a flash light to make the night journey a little less cumbersome. Once you reach the base of the Light House, at night, you will begin to experience the magic of the Fresnel Lens. A truly amazing experience for all. The Kids really love this part of the Light House...They talk about it for days!

Oregon Sea Lion Caves...a must see. Yes, if you are traveling the Oregon Coast you have to stop in and see the Caves. They are a tourist attraction requiring an entrance fee but well worth cost and visit.

Our kids, us included, love this natural attraction. You'll descend, by stairs, walkways and an elevator 208-feet into the caves. It's spectacular as you make your descent. The views are awe-inspiring of the ocean cliffs, gulls soaring in the winds and the majestic Heceta Head Light House off in the distance.

The Caves Are Huge...

They are noted in the Guiness World Records as the world's largest Sea Cave. Thousands of years of coastal ocean water surge carved out the caves in the cliffs. A perfect sanctuary for sea lions. It's a little cool in the caves so be prepared if you or your kids are susceptible to cold. It's a great refuge if the weather is hot, a nice place to cool down.

Once in the caves, there is no time limit. You can walk up to a fenced area and admire the Sea Lions for hours. You and your little ones are protected by a fenced-off area. You will not walk amongst the Sea Lions; however, you will get pretty close.

If you are filming or taking pictures it's a little challenging because of the lighting and the chain-linked fence. To overcome this obstacle we positioned the lens right up next to an opening in the fence. As a result, we got pretty good pictures, no fence was showing.

Location of The Sea Lion Caves...

The Caves on the west side of Highway 101, 11 miles north of Florence and 38 miles south of Newport. They are open from 8:00 a.m. July and August, 9:00 a.m. the rest of the year. Closing time varies. Give them a call at 541-547-3111.

Bring your binoculars along to view birds and if your timing is right you may see the gray whales during their migration.

We have over
20-years in the Travel/Tour business. After researching the competitive
market of travel tours we decided to review our long term goals and decided to
invest our time into an online consumer oriented Travel Magazine.

down-to-earth account of how this site, Northwest Travel Tips, came into
existence, how it earns us money and how much unbelievable fun we are having with our dream job...

Right now, out of about 17 Million websites on the Internet we are listed in
the top 8% of all websites. That's ALL Websites! Our goal is
to have our site listed in the top 2% of All Websites...that will happen.
And to think we are not computer literate. We knew next to nothing about
creating a website let alone getting it listed in the top searches on the
Internet and this all began in November of 2003.

OK, so you want to know how we did it? We can summarize it all in one
word...Site
Build It...giving us our dream job.

Yep, Site
Build It, took us to another level. We were looking for a way to make
money and not just from a J-O-B. We played with several business
opportunities including MLM, only to have none of them pan out to fulfill our
hopes and dreams. One time we took a passion of ours, travel, and built a
Personalized Travel/Tour Company, had success and wanted to find a way to expand
upon that to give us even more freedom.

To us, FREEDOM is one of the top reasons why we chose to go into business.
We found a job just wasn't able to give us the kind of freedom we wanted.
Also, if we worked hard, we wanted that hard work to come back to us in our
business and not building someone else's business.

As the Internet came more prevalent we thought there must be a way to put our
passion of traveling online. We searched and searched and it wasn't until
one day that we came across a FREE net course offered by Ken Evoy. I took
the course and was excited by the information about succeeding on the Internet.
In fact, you can take a FREE Net
Writing Masters Course. Upon completion of the course you'll have the
ability to write and sell products on the net. The bottom line is making
money and yielding FREEDOM!...That's important to us but you have to figure out
what is important to you.

Upon completion of the course we dived into Site
Build It. This has everything from building a website, search engine
submission, newsletters...the list goes on and on. You might say it's like
a "business-in-a-box". All you have to do is plug your ideas into it.
There's an entire course that goes along with Site Build It, including "Niche
Markets" and their demands, competition and profitability. It's incredible
the amount of resources at your fingertips that would take hundreds of hours and
thousands of dollars to get otherwise.

Here's the targeted traffic the site generated at its beginnings: December
2003 we had 1403 visitors, January 04 - 2622 visitors, February 04 - 3184, March
04 - 3728, April 04 - 5615, May 04- 7246 AND it KEEPS GROWING! What does
that mean, targeted traffic coming to our site, money in our pockets yielding
FREEDOM!

Before we go to far...I must add this. Wherever you go, you must always bring your good first aid kit. What's a good first-aid kit? You could save someone's life and maybe your own. We've already had the "lifesaving" experience and cannot stress enough how one needs to be prepared in your Camping endeavor.

Oregon Camping Possibilities...

Campground Associations - There are a few of them out there and yes, we even have one. Honestly, we never thought we'd spend a penny to camp at some "resort" type campground. We never thought it was camping. I personally had the idea that the harder the better. Well, with four children and a wife who views camping like a walk in the park, I eventually had to give in to the Camp Ground Association.

There are benefits to the associations, at least the one we belong to. One of the strong points that we like is the security and safety for our Kids. There are Park Rangers throughout the camp ground 24 hours a day. Only members and their guests of the association are permitted on the facilities. Essentially it has given us a sense of peace.

The Campground Association also offers several amenities like: clean bathrooms, swimming pool, hot tub, bicycle trails, store, opportunity to purchase lunch or dinner, arts and crafts for Kids, pool table, ping-pong, game room, television, movies...

The part I really like is we can just show up and camp...no additional fee! We even have the option, if we do not want to sleep in a tent, to rent a cabin or trailer. Honestly, I still like the tent but sometimes I am overpowered by the rest of the family, we rent a trailer.

We have available to us, through our camp ground association, a variety of places to stay at throughout Oregon. Places like Seaside. When other campgrounds are full we still have a place to camp. We love it!

Don't run out and "Buy" a campground association without checking out the options. You can contact us anytime and we'll share with you what we have learned. If you want some more specific information please Contact Us. We respond to all comments and/or questions. OR, if you belong to an association we'd like to hear your experience.
Oregon State Parks provides a very systematic approach to camping with a few options. The days of just pulling up into a State Park and camping are nearly gone. With the high amount of people and interest in camping, Oregon State Parks had to do something. The state park system contracted to a Fee Reservation Service to manage the bookings for the various campsites, 800-452-6587. Some campsites are still on a first-come first serve basis while others require a reservation.

Don't want to pitch a tent?...No problem! Oregon Camping just got easier...Oregon State Parks offers you: Tepees, Wagons, Cabins and Yurts. What is a Yurt? It's a circular tent structure with a wooden floor and canvas material as the roof and sides.

The cost is very reasonable to stay at these places from $27 and up as of this writing. The draw back, you need to reserve well in advance, like several months. Again, when you Travel to Oregon, make sure to plan ahead.

If you like the coastal area, you could easily spend a week Yurt hoping for your camping experience. There are 21 Yurts along the coast, located from the North to the South. What a wonderful way to experience the Oregon Beaches without bringing a tent.

Oh, each one of the accommodations comes with some type of bunk, just bring your sleeping bag and a joyful attitude for your Oregon camping experience.

There are so many places to choose from, things to do and see. The question is always asked of us, "where do we begin?" We recommend that you begin with what you like and plan ahead. If you have to Travel to Oregon to begin your Oregon camping experience, plan, plan that is the key.

Backpacking - Is it still possible? Absolutely! However, there is a high demand for backpacking; consequently, backpacking in many areas requires a permit and again that requires planning. This makes Oregon camping competitive. You are competing with others all over the world to share the joys and wonders of the Oregon backcountry.

Both the GMRS Radio and FRS Radio are great communication links when you are traveling either by car or on foot. You can use the radio to communicate between vehicles, hiking or shopping. We give our kids a radio to keep in touch.

For licensing details, see below.

The radios are inexpensive and keep the communication flowing when you are out of speaking distance. If you are not familiar with these little gems, they are the upgraded walkie-talkie. The GMRS operates on a different frequency than the traditional walkie-talkie and perform much better.

The quality and features of the GMRS radio and FRS radios are continually improving. We
initially purchased "one-channel" radios several years ago, and they still work! Now, with new models, the added sub-codes allows for hundreds of channels to choose from and longer distances.

The GMRS Radio OR Cell Phone...

We've contemplated this thought GMRS Radio vs Cell Phones; however, due to the Cost Savings we chose the
GMRS for communications while hiking, camping or whenever we need communications in a close area. (The range is limited, unlike a cell phone but if you are in close area communication the GMRS does very well.)

You don't have to use your Radio all the time, there's no monthly fee. If one you should lose or break your GMRS, it's no big deal. Just get another...they're cheaper than a cell phone. We're sure you can come up with a whole list of reasons too.

A cell phone does have its place' however, supplementing the cell phone with your GMRS enhances your communication abilities.

The GMRS Radio has a Wide Variety of Uses...

We've use our GMRS radios and FRS radios extensively. Recently, we caravaned, across Spain, with four vehicles. The radios made the trip so smooth.

You can imagine the amount of bathroom and food stops we made with eight adults and 10 kids! The radios proved their worth. (We left four GMRS radios in Spain...they are not on the market there, perhaps because of frequency regulations...I don't know.)

UPDATE...UPDATE...We were informed that the GMRS and FRS Radios are not marketed in Spain because of regulations. The frequencies of the GMRS and FRS radios may cause interference with local law enforcement, public service and national defense. In Europe they use different frequencies. If you plan a trip overseas you
need to know this.

We also use the GMRS hiking, camping, traveling with 2 or more vehicles, just about anywhere and anytime communication is needed.. It makes communication simplistic with these little GMRS radios...and there is no additional cost like a cell phone.

In 2001, two climbers were stranded on Mt. Rainier. They sent out calls on their FRS radio. A kid several miles away picked up their distress call and notified
authorizes. A rescue team was dispatched. The FRS radios saved their lives.

Don't underestimate the value of these FRS radios. Over the last year the FCC added more FRS frequencies. The typical range of the FRS radio is about two miles. It will vary with the terrain. Also, we have found it to vary with the battery level. Keep fresh batteries or charge the re-chargeable ones.

Licensing...

The GRMS radio, on the other hand, requires a simple license to operate the radio. The license is easy to get from the FCC, just fill out a form, send in the application fee and presto...you have a license. Call 1-888-225-5322.

The license is good for 5-years and costs $80 as of this writing. That cost could change in the future. Either call for updates or visit GMRS Licensing the Home Page to the FCC is: http://wireless.fcc.gov/uls.

We like the GMRS radio because of it's wattage output. This in turns means the distance increases. Some of the radios can go up to seven-miles; however, most of them on the marketplace right now go up to five-miles. This again is determined by the terrain. If you need that added distance then the GMRS radio is a great way to go.

The cost of the GMRS radio is more expensive than the FRS radio. You get that added distance for a little more cost.

Our kids love the radios. For us it's like having an extended arm. They know to contact us for any emergency. Often they contact us just to talk. We love it.

We encourage you, as you travel throughout the Northwest, or anyplace for that matter, bring your
GMRS Radio or FRS Radio...you'll be glad you did.

Oregon Coast Tour...As we previously mentioned on other pages, we developed a Tour Company specializing in tours throughout the Northwest. We created this mile-by-mile guide to help you on your way along the Oregon Coast. Your tour begins on the Northern Coast of Oregon, Astoria and ends some 360 miles later at the Oregon-California border. We encourage you to sit back, relax and enjoy your tour. Highway 101, along the Coast is now a part of our National Scenic Heritage. It was designated as a scenic byway, The Pacific Coast Scenic Byway. You'll follow Highway 101 all the way along the tour. ( We are continually updating the Mile-by-Mile Tour, be sure to check back periodically.)

Mile 0 - Astoria is the oldest settlement in the Northwest along the Oregon Coast. Here you have access to a lot of history about Lewis & Clark. Just outside Astoria is Fort Stevens State Park , on the Oregon Coast. This park is ideal for camping and has more campsites than any along the Oregon Coast.

Mile 7 - Fort Clatsop National Memorial, Oregon Coast. You'll have to turn off Highway 101 on to Old 101 and head east about 3 miles to Clatsop Road. There you will see signs to Fort Clatsop National Memorial. This is the location where Lewis & Clark spent the winter of 1805. This is great for the Northwest History buffs or if you have kids, it will give them some insights into Northwest History.

Mile 20 - Seaside Factory Outlet Stores, Oregon Coast. You got to stop at the outlet stores if you want some bargains...remember, there's no sales tax in Oregon so an added bargain for those traveling in. You've also just entered into

Mile 28 - Ecola State Park, Oregon Coast. Here you'll get spectacular views of the Oregon Coast and if you time it right, the whale migration. There are several picnic areas, and hiking trails, sorry no camping, . You can even see some Old Growth trees!

Mile 30 - Cannon Beach, Oregon Coast. If you want to relax, this is the place. Take a view of the privately owned Tillamook Rock Light House. It's located about a mile out to sea. It was once a public light house but now someone else has the honor of owning it. You can look but don't touch.

Mile 34 - Hug Point State Recreational Site, Oregon Coast. This area was an old wagon road, the drivers had to "hug" the point to get around it. It's pretty interesting and if you take the hike from Cannon Beach, this is where you'll end up.

Mile 40 - Oswald West State Park. This is about 2500 acres of rain forests, view points and tucked away beaches. If you want some solitude here, bring your tent. You can hike in to some tent only campsites. There is not a lot of amenities so be prepared. There are some who surf in this area...if you do...enjoy. At the beach you'll find some caves and tide pools. The kids love it...so do we.

Mile 43 - Neahkahnie Beach. Apparently this is the location where a Spanish Ship was beached. The crew carried it's cargo of "Treasure" ashore and buried it. Well, my wife from Spain is always excited about the possibilities of finding this treasure...so far we haven't found it. So, you have a fighting chance. Perhaps we'll see you there looking too.

Mile 44 - Nehalem Bay State Park. This is a wonderful State Park nestled around the communities of Manzanita, Nehalem and Wheeler. It's a very diverse park with some 280 campsites, 9 yurts, a horse camp, a hiker/biker camp and a an airplane fly-in camp. There's some 890 acres with trails for hikers and bikers alike. The park is close to some of the best clamming and crabbing areas. Also, windsurfers take note...the waves just north of the Nehalem Spit at Manzanita, are
spectacular! Check 'em out.

Mile 50 - Rockaway Beach. The beach known for 7 miles of an uninterrupted sand beach. It was initially built as a resort town in the 1920's. It's a true getaway.

Mile 54 - Barview Jetty Park. This is a county park with some pretty good campsites. Take a break along here for a nice picnic too and check out the jetty.

Mile 56 - Garibaldi is a little fishing community off the Oregon Coast. It offers fun for all ages. Both sport and
commercial fishing are on-going within this community of 1000. Every March is the annual crab race, in July is Garibaldi Days and during the Christmas season is the Christmas Tree Express to Sparks, Nevada. While here, try your hand at fishing for some trout on the Miami River.

Mile 64 - Tillamook Cheese Factory is located on the Northern part of Tillamook City, Oregon Coast. You got to stop here and take the self-guided tour of Tillamook Cheese. The Tillamook Cheese factory is on the top 10 list of sites visited within the State. It's an education for both young and old. Once the tour is finished, visit the gift shop and by all means buy some of that famous Tillamook Ice Cream. You can eat it right there.

Tillamook is the center for the dairy industry along the Oregon Coast. The annual Dairy Parade is a big hit in June. In the late 90's this entire area was under water due to extensive flooding. I had the opportunity to help in the clean-up. There was lot's to clean-up. I hope this doesn't happen again in the near future...must be one of those 100 year floods.

Mile 65 - Three Capes Scenic Loop, Oregon Coast. It's time for a little detour and get off Highway 101. The Three Capes Loops is one of the Oregon Coast's 38-mile thrilling yet scenic driving experiences. The loop will wind along the coast between the towns of Tillamook and Pacific City. You will pass three prominent headlands: Cape Meares, Cape Lookout, and Cape Kiwanda.

To begin you excursion, note your odometer reading and head west from Tillamook on Third Street. You'll pass what was the thriving ocean resort town of Bay Ocean. It's gone now, more than 30 years ago Bay Ocean washed into the Pacific Ocean; houses, businesses, everything...gone during a raging Pacific storm.

Arriving at Cape Meares State Park along the Oregon Coast, on the northern tip of Three Capes Loop, visit Cape Meares Light House. You'll also get some sweeping views of the caves and sea lion rock. While there, take a picture of Octopus Tree. You'll know what we mean, it's an old spruce with many legs.

On the loop, stop by the Whiskey Creek Fish Hatchery. It's a good education about salmon for both young and old.

If you are looking to camp here's the spot, Cape Lookout State Park. It's south of the beach towns Oceanside and Netarts. You'll have 1974 acres to explore in this wildlife park. There are 215 paved campsites and yurts and cabins are available too. Make reservations though.

You'll arrive at Cape Kiwanda State Natural Area. Here the huge waves pound the sandstone cliffs and caves.
Just to the south the 327 foot Haystack Rock juts from the ocean here awaiting for you to take a picture. It's much photographed. Surfers are able to ride some of the longest waves along the Oregon Coast, right here. All the while, look up and you may spot a hang-glider catching some of the wind currents off the rock cliffs.

A little over a mile, south of Cape Kiwanda is Pacific City , along the Oregon Coast. This is pretty neat. This is one of the only places along the Oregon Coast where flat-bottom fishing dories are launched directly into the surf. During the salmon season, late summer you may have an opportunity to watch this event. Also, don't be shy if you want to buy some salmon. Just walk up to one of the local fishermen and ask if they'd sell you one. They are fresh and good!

Just outside of Pacific City is Robert Straub State Park. Take a walk along the white sand beach towards the mouth of the Nestucca River. This is considered by many, the best fishing river on the Northern Oregon Coast. The park is a day-use only park...sorry, no camping.

About 38 miles on your odometer you'll be meeting up with Highway 101 again.

Mile 68 - To the south of Tillamook is the Tillamook Naval Air Museum, Oregon Coast. Just drive along 101 and you can't miss it on the left as you head south. Turn left on Long Prairie Road and right on Blimp Blvd. If you like airplanes, like I do, you'll love this museum.

Mile 98 - Neskowin, there's not much here, a grocery store, restaurant and some
accommodations. Pretty good place to relax, so if you have some time try out one of their 2 golf courses.

Mile 112 - The 45th Parallel. If you have studied about the earth's rotation and wind patterns you will quickly notice that along the 45th parallel is a convergence of wind, commonly referred to as the trade winds. This area ultimately makes for great kite flying opportunities.

Mile 113 - Lincoln City, Oregon Coast, is a relatively "new" city. It was formed in 1965, combining the cities of: Oceanlake, Delake, Taft and the communities of Cutler City and Nelscott to form the present day Lincoln City. The trademark for Lincoln City is the miles of sandy beaches. A total of some 7.5 miles of sandy beaches.

Mile 115 - Devils Lake, Oregon Coast, here you can enjoy camping, boating, take a kayak tour or bring your own kayaks along. You will also find the D River, connecting Devils Lake to the Pacific Ocean. D River is listed in the Guinness Book of Records as the world's shortest river, all 200 yards of it.

Mile 116 - Factory Outlet Stores, shop till you drop with the 65 stores along the Oregon Coast

Mile 123 - Gleneden Beach area is just south of Lincoln City offering the coast's most prestigious resort. You'll also find some of Oregon's finest art galleries right here.

Mile 125 - Fogarty Creek State Recreation Area has, you'll find a wonderful little cove, great to get out of the wind and sun-bathe. The cove has basalt cliffs on one side of the beach and a creek flowing across the creek. Great place for the kids.

Mile 126 - Boiler Bay State Scenic Viewpoint, a great location to look for the gray whales. There's also tide pools among the rocks and small coves. The beach is not accessible here, you'll need to get access at Fogarty Creek, a mile north. In 1910 a small freighter, J. Marhoffer sank along the coast here. At low tides the boiler of the freighter is visible, look over towards the sandbar.

Mile 128 - Depoe Bay, known as the world's smallest harbor. Aside from watching the boats move in and out of the smallest harbor you can also see the spouting horns. Directly across Hwy 101 from Depoe Bay's Souvenir shop, you will see these horns in action. Spouting horns are merely blasts of water shot through basalt holes from the ocean's surge. They are
spectacular here at Depoe Bay, perhaps more so than any other part on the coast. For the movie buffs, Depoe Bay is the scene in the movie, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. This is the place that Jack Nicholson took the escapees out on a charter boat for a day of salmon fishing. Rent the movie, you'll see.

Mile 131 - Cape Foulweather, named by Captain James Cook in 1778 was the first glimpse of land after leaving the Hawaiian Islands. The Cape lives up to it's name with gusting winds over 100 miles per hour. The views are awesome. Lookout for the sea lions off the rocks.

Mile 132 - Devils Punch Bowl State Natural Area overlooks a collapsed sea cave that during high tide the seas churn themselves into a punchbowl of foam. Pretty impressive site to see. Just next to the Punchbowl is the Marine Gardens. At low tide you can explore the numerous tide pools and even take a look into the Devils Punchbowl too. Watch the tide though!

Mile 134 - Beverly Beach State Park, wow, a wonderful and beautiful park. It's the State's second-busiest campground next to Fort Stevens. There's 140 acres to stroll around in with 257 campsites.

Mile 138 - Yaquina Head Light House, just north of Newport, is this well photographed light house. It's considered the oldest building in Newport. The light was first turned on November 3, 1871 serving a s a light source for the harbor entrance. As a working light house, it did not last long, the light was invisible to ships approaching from the north. That was a great engineering mistake. In August, 1873 another light house took Yaquina's place. But, this light house was also built in the wrong place. It should have been built at Otter Crest, several miles to the north. Instead it was built on Yaquina Head now known as the Yaquina Head Light.

Mile 141 - Newport is considered by most, Oregon's premier resort destinations. There's plenty of sandy beaches, shops, restaurants, fishing and a host of other outdoor activities. While in Newport you have to see the Oregon Coast Aquarium and the Marine Science Center. Newport is becoming a year-round resort town.

What does the freighter, Selendang AYU, and an Alaska oil spill have to do with the Northwest, and especially about travel? Well, quite a bit actually. Since our recent encounter with the hurricanes in the Gulf Region, travel in that area was impacted immensely. And who's to say it cannot happen in the Northwest. We'd all feels it's effects within the entire region. And, furthermore, I personally had the opportunity to participate in the oil clean-up process; therefore, giving you a first hand report of the spill.

The Spill...

(The following information, regarding the actual spill were gathered from Coast Guard and The Alaska Fish & Game reports.)

The Malaysian freighter, Selendang AYU, a 738-foot cargo ship, ran aground off the coast of Unalaska Island, December 2004. The rough and powerful Bering seas had no mercy, split the large freighter into two sections.

The freighter, bound from Tacoma, Washington to China, was carrying some 420,000 gallons of bunker fuel, 18,000 gallons of diesel with a cargo of 60,000 tons of soybeans. When the ship hit the rocks fuel and cargo began pouring into the Bering Sea.

Prior to the Malaysian freighter running aground, the crew was struggling to keep engines running. Apparently a cylinder had ruptured on the afternoon of December 6, 2004 forcing the captain to make a crucial and difficult decision. Should he run the engine and risk making it to a safe port, perhaps the engine would be totally destroyed, or should he shut down the engines and attempt to repair the engine at sea?

The captain chose to shut the engines down and attempt a repair. Without propulsion, the Selendang was at the mercy of the Bering Sea. The fate of the crew and the Selendang simply depended on repairing the engine.

Engine repairs are typically not crucial, if the ship has entire ocean as a staging platform; however, close to shore it could be devastating. In this case, the crew was required to utilize a crane, change out the liner and restart the engine before any weather conditions could drive them into the Alaska coastline. Typically the liner change out takes 15-20 hours in smooth sea conditions but in the thrashing Bering Seas, the time would take much longer.

The Selendang was no match for the treacherous Bering Sea, the crew could not complete the repair job. Records report that the captain radioed for help at 1 a.m. on December 7th. The Coast Guard responded sending a cutter to the aid the freighter.

In an all out attempt to save the Selendang from the rugged Unalaska coastline, the Coast Guard and local tug boats attempted to tow the freighter away from the coast with no avail. The seas snapped the tow lines. The freighter dropped its own anchor; however, the violent seas broke the cable.

Winds were gusting upwards to 70 mph pushing the freighter closer and closer to shore. The focus turned also to rescuing the freighters crew members. Two Coast Guard helicopters rescued 19 crew members in a heroic manner. The captain and seven crew members remained with the ship, attempting to restart the engines until the freighter hit a submerged rock.

The Selendang was now doomed as sea water poured into the severed hull. It was time to abandon ship. A helicopter was dispatched to pick up the remaining crew members. While the helicopter was picking up the remaining crew members a huge wave engulfed the helicopter crashing it into the sea.

The three Coast Guard crewmen survived due to their survival suits; however, six of the seven Selendang crew members died. The captain, still on the bow of the vessel with a Coast Guard diver, watched in hoar as the helicopter crashed. They were later picked up by another helicopter.

The freighter, now broke into two sections, was pouring thousands gallons of fuel and tons of soybeans into the Bering Sea. The mission now turned into one of oil spill clean-up.

The Clean Up...

The clean-up process began soon after oil was making its appearance on Unalaska's beaches. Due to heavy weather conditions, a full fledged oil spill cleanup could not take place until the spring of 2005.

A host of environmental companies were involved in the coordination and actual cleanup process. Waste Management and General Environmental handled and managed the oily waste derived from the clean up process.

Waste Management anchored two support barges, in two separate bays, to receive oily waste and act as a storage platform for the much needed spill cleanup supplies. The oily waste was collected on the beaches, put into heavy duty poly bags, loaded on a small transport vessel and off-loaded by crane into waste containers on the barge.

A 5-person crew managed each Waste Management barge. A crew support vessel was tied alongside or nearby offering berthing and the support necessities. The barge crew was rotated out approximately every month; however, some barge crew personnel elected to stay longer.

The Waste Management crew were highly experienced personal, very capable of managing the day to day activities associated with the oily waste. In spite of severe weather conditions, working in a remote location, and living aboard a support vessel, the crew handled all of the waste in a safe and professional manner.

Considering the tedious beach clean up work and rough seas, the method for cleaning the beaches and managing the waste was very safe, secure and effective. Waste Management did an exceedingly well job of managing the waste for transport out of the Bering Sea as well as the preparation for the ultimate treatment and/or disposal of the oily waste.

Summers End...

It was mid-September, 2005 when the main efforts of the clean up were called to a halt. A small response and survey team remained to scope out the beaches.

A local Dutch Harbor company was contracted to salvage portions of the Selendang.

The Future...

We'll have to monitor the situation with information coming out of Dutch Harbor regarding any on-going spill clean up activities, the salvage of the Selendang, and wild life threats as a result of the spill. If you have further interest in this specific oil spill, contact the government officials for the State of Alaska.

The Ballard Locks, also known as the Hiram M. Chittenden Locks, are an added edge for a romantic time in Seattle or place of interest for nearly everyone. This is a must see for Seattleites and visitors of all ages. Children especially enjoy visiting the Locks.

Granted, you can find great details about the locks on various sites, books and brochures; however, our purpose is to reveal some of the insights often over-looked. First, the Ballard Locks are a place for romance and secondly, the Locks are a fabulous treat for a family outing.

The late spring and summer months present a fabulous opportunity to relish in the romantic setting the Locks offer. You can bring a picnic lunch and sit on one of the many terraced grass slopes over-looking the locks. As you feel the warmth of the sun on your forehead, with a background array of music provided by the local birds, boats will literally pass by on their way to Lake Washington or Puget Sound. You'll have the chance to marvel at these magnificent structures from giant-size yachts to one-person kayaks.

Strolling around the grounds presents a wonderful opportunity to explore the history makings of the locks. You'll easily find the Visitors Center which is host to the historical and workings conditions of the Locks. Moreover, as you stroll through the grounds you may come upon one of the live musical performances. Set yourself on a piece of grass and enjoy in the live entertainment provided by local musicians. You can't go wrong with this!

As you continue to stroll throughout the grounds, winding your way through some elegant gardens, you can gingerly walk over a top section of the Locks and pay tribute to the Fish Ladder. This area is truly spectacular, watching fish literally jump up the Ladder and enter the fresh water. You'll have a birds-eye-view at the under water window viewing area.

Getting There

The Ballard Locks are located, obviously, in Ballard, a Scandinavian community on the northwestern portion of Seattle. The address is 3015 NW 54th St,. Seattle, WA 98107. You can simply look it up in the Thomas Guide or Map Quest.

When you finish your journey at the Ballard Locks and you're back in your car, continue following the road westward along the water until you reach Golden Gardens Park. This is a nice park to hang out for awhile and enjoy the view looking over the water to the Olympic Mountain Range. A fun thing for the kids is to build a campfire on the beach and roast marshmallows.

Now the challenge presents itself, you must get to the Ballard Locks. That's all you have to do, the Locks will do the rest!

If you're visiting Seattle or live in the Seattle area, it's a must to
participate in the Seattle Space Needle experience.

Granted, you can go directly to www.spaceneedle.com and get all the current
information such as tickets, restaurant reservations, observation deck hours,
etc. Our purpose is to hone in on the experience. We're not
selling the Space Needle, we're sharing some insights that may help you with the
entire experience.

The Space Needle is an awesome structure soaring 605 feet into the Seattle
skies. On a cloudy day, it's likely, for those in the Needle to experience the
clouds soaring by or simply be entrenched in clouds. It gives a feeling of
"wonder"; you're unable to see the ground yet you're not flying in an
airplane but held high in a stationary point.

Definitely, visiting the Seattle Space Needle on a sunny clear day is by
far the best experience. It can get a bit busy in the Observation
Deck, but if you go early, morning hours, you're likely to have more freedom
without dodging groups of people. The morning hours are usually good for
visibility too. To the south you'll have a magnificent view of Mt. Rainier; to
west, the Olympics; the east, the Cascade Mountains and to the north, The North
Cascades.

The view is picturesque. Bring a camera with plenty of film or you can
purchase the overpriced film at the gift shop. Binoculars are another
added touch to bring with you to the Seattle Space Needle. You will not
have to compete with anyone getting a birds-eye-view of some magical features
off in the distance.

If you plan on eating, try out the Lunch menu. It's pretty good
and relatively modest in cost. We particularly enjoy the lunch over the
dinner. You'll have the opportunity to embellish yourself in some pretty
good food, engage in stimulating conversation while spinning around at the top
of the Space Needle. The restaurant spins giving you an opportunity to
view 360º of the Seattle skyline. Every hour the restaurant travels a
complete circle.

Parking at the Needle can sometimes be a bear. There are a few pay
parking lots and several free areas for street parking. We've found some
of the best street parking to the west of the Space Needle, towards Puget Sound
off Queen Anne Ave. and the surrounding area. If you don't mind walking a
few blocks, this area is great.

After paying visit to the Space Needle, it may pay tribute to get a good
picture of the structure from a distance. One of the most spectacular
places for pictures of the Needle is on Queen Anne Hill. Head north on
Queen Anne Ave., go up the terraced hill and turn left on W Highland Dr.
About 2-blocks to the west you'll see a small park on the left with a fabulous
view of the Space Needle.

The Space Needle also brings out the romance in you. If you one
looking for a romantic time out on the town, the Needle is for you! Take
an early evening stroll on the grounds surrounding the Needle, then head up to
the observation deck and capture the sunset. It's a marvelous romantic
setting. Go-all-out and dine in the revolving restaurant. If you
time it right, you can participate in the natural romance of the sunset and the twinkling
of the Seattle lights as they glow in the Seattle twilight.

Here’s a fabulous Northwest getaway, fun for the entire family and romantic for the ones looking to fill the air with romance.

Protection Island, British Columbia, is a spectacular, low-keyed environment beckoning the adventurous to visit. Quaint as it is, there’s lots of opportunity for exploration, relaxation and just plain fun!

The only way to reach Protection Island is by paddling, rowing, swimming, sailing, or boarding the ferry to cross Nanaimo harbor. The 10-minute ferry ride will take you through time into an era of overwhelming peace and quiet. There’s no need to hurry on Protection Island, most of the transportation is either by foot, bikes, or golf carts.

You have the choice of making a day trip out of your excursion to Protection Island or do one better and savor the memories with an over-night stay. There are two B&B’s to accommodate you on the island as well as a few private rentals; however, before you go make reservations ahead of time.

Protection Island is home to 350 residents. There are no schools, no churches, no post office, and no business except for the Dingy Dock Floating Pub. This is the Number-1 tourist attraction on the Island.

The Island is approximately 3-miles in circumference; therefore, walking is a wonderful means of transportation. Within an hour you’ll have walked the entire perimeter of the Island.

An exciting area to visit is take a stroll over to Newcastle. Newcastle, a separate island is reachable by boat or foot on a low tide. Time the tides and you can walk across the sand spit, it’s an amazing adventure.

Newcastle is home to the rugged 750-acre marine park with forests, meadows, beaches, and numerable places to stroll. Or if you’d prefer you can catch a nearby ferry heading back to Nanaimo then on to Newcastle.

Newcastle opens the door back into the industrial age after leaving Protection Island. Here you’ll enjoy the amenities of a historical downtown. A fun place to visit and satisfy your taste buds is at Tina’s Diner. Upon entering the diner, you’ll walk back in time to the 1950’s with its good ole fashioned food and 50’s style decor.

Getting There

Protection Island is just offshore from Nanaimo. Nanaimo is approximately 70 miles north of Victoria B.C. on Vancouver Island. You can easily drive to the city of Vancouver, B.C., park your car at the Helijet parking lot and board the HarborLynx passenger ferry to Nanaimo. To further your journey to Protection Island, once arriving at Nanaimo you’ll board the Protection Connection ferry, call them at 250-753-8244.

Continuing on to Newcastle Island, from Protection Island, you’ll board the ferry to Newcastle Island, call for more details at 250-753-8422. Or you also have the option to walk across the sand spit, at low tide, from Protection Island to Newcastle.

Oregon covered bridges are truly a romantic dream. And, you don’t have to travel all the way to the east coast to view these magnificent structures.

Oregon is home to 52 covered bridges with 28 of the bridges featured in Linn and Lane counties. Most of the bridges are now listed on the Register of Historic Places.

Since the turn of the 20th Century, Oregon has boasted some 450 covered bridges. The 398 of these bridges have succumbed to the element of time. They quite simply, wore out.

Why bother to build a covered bridge in the first place? The bridge lasts longer in a covered environment. Oregon’s "liquid sunshine" (rain) is one of nature’s elements that yields greats amount of wear and tear on wooden structures, namely bridges. It therefore makes total sense to enclose the bridge and protect it from the elements.

You can visit a series of Oregon covered bridges by following the covered bridge loop. Bring your camera; the bridges make for perfect picture settings.

To begin, just east of Albany near the town of Scio. Follow the signs for the "Covered Bridge Tour Route". The bridges date back from the late 1930’s.

The Shimanek Bridge is one of Linn County’s most picturesque covered bridges. It was built in 1966; however, it’s predecessors date back to 1891. Four previous bridges were destroyed from flooding or damage from the elements. The Shimanek Bridge resembles a classic red barn with white trim and louvered windows.

The Larwood Bridge, built in 1939 has a spectacular picnic spot. The Larwood Wayside hosts all the amenities for picnicking nestling along the bank of a creek. You’ll have a great view of the bridge from this vantage point.

Moving into Lane County, the town of Cottage Grove is host to six covered bridges. They are located in and around the town. The Mosby Creek Bridge is the only bridge open for vehicle traffic; it’s also the oldest bridge in Cottage Grove dating back to 1920.

In the middle of Cottage Grove you’ll see two bridges, pedestrian and railroad bridge.
Near the town of Lowell, east of Eugene, are four covered bridges in the immediate area. Here you have the Lowell, Parvin, Pengra and Unity Bridges.

The longest of Oregon Covered Bridges is the 180-foot Office Bridge, it’s a spectacle to marvel at. In the town of Westfir this bridge was built in 1944 to connect the mill of a lumberyard to its office. The bridge spans the North Fork of the Willamette River.

Getting to The Oregon Covered Bridges…

Scio Covered Bridge Loop – Exit off of I-5 to Albany and follow Highway 226 just east of the town.

Exit of off I-5 to Cottage Grove. You’ll see the two covered bridges in Cottage Grove. Head east following Mosby Creek Road to view the others.

Just south of Eugene, get onto Highway 58 heading south to Lowell. Continue east towards Westfir to view the famous Office Bridge.

Beware of the con-game, of to "good to be true". If a vacation sounds too good to be true, use extreme caution. Vacationers are often lured over the phone by a fast-pitched sales effort or on-line. Use caution, and don't be afraid to hang up the phone and save yourself many possible headaches.

One of the biggest dangers now is the threat of identity theft. And one of the greatest ways to snatch your identity is by the popular "Spy Ware" ads that pop up everywhere. There are spy ware ads that are particularly targeting vacationers. DO NOT purchase from any of these spy ware ads that merely pop-up. Once you purchase on-line, these culprits have your identity, you may become a victim of identity theft. And some of the spy ware is actually spying on your computer and sending vital information to the criminals.

We suggest, if you want a spy ware program, purchase the spy ware in a CD from your local computer store, BestBuys, Circuit City, etc.

Tips to Avoid Scams and Identity Theft:

Free trips often have additional taxes and high fees associated with the "Free Vacation". When you add it all up, it's really not free at all. Get the details in writing before you decide to ever give vital information, like your credit card number. Do your Homework.

The Southern Oregon Coast is just as spectacular as the Northern Oregon Coast. Each locality has it's own uniqueness and the ability to draw you into its surroundings.

As you leave the Newport area you can continue your drive south or cut inland, east, to Corvallis.

Mile 142 - You'll pass over the historic Yaquina Bay Bridge. This bridge was built in 1936 and is part of the Oregon State's Rec Sites. You'll notice it just on the northern portion of the bridge. You'll want to stop here, visit the museum and venture off onto the North Bay Scenic Loop.

The North Bay Scenic Loop follows the 1885 Oregon Pacific Railroad passage along the Yaquina River to Toledo. It's a 13-mile loop revealing estuary vistas, historical markers and scenic wonderlands. If you have a bicycle, park the car and venture off on the loop by bicycle.

Toledo, the small town along the loop, is one of the oldest in the area. In the past, timber was the thriving business for Toledo, today the town is a host of specialty shops, restaurants and a museum. It's deep water harbor provides adequate shelter for the fishing vessels.

Mile 142 - Hosts the Oregon Coast Aquarium. This is time well spent for all, the entire family. This is a world-class facility with an array of indoor and outdoor exhibits. Be sure to visit the "Passages of the Deep" exhibit.

Mile 143 - The Southern Oregon Coast welcomes you to South Beach State Park. This is an ideal place to camp with the open grassy areas. There are some 225 paved campsites and 20 some yurts. It's a great place to hang out and use as a base camp to explore the surrounding area.

Mile 149 - This marks for another great exploratory spot, Ona Beach State Park. The park is nestled along the estuary of Beaver Creek, a chance to participate in the kayaking tours, looking for animals and picnicking.

Mile 150 - Seal Rock is an upcoming resort town along the southern Oregon coast. You'll notice many amenities along the roadside and the appropriate time of year, you can engage in the popular whale watching events. There are local whales that live in these waters all throughout the summer months.

Mile 156 - Waldport is a small community along Alsea Bay providing fishing, crabbing, clamming and there's a free crabbing dock waiting for you. You'll notice the coastline in this area relatively flat; however, it still yields a scenic beauty.

Mile 159 - The camper at heart, here's another wonderful coastal campground, Beachside State Park. It's small with its some 79 paved campsites but extremely busy.

Mile 160 - Tillicum Beach Campground is operated by a concessionaire for the Forest Service. There are no reservations required and offers fishing, hiking and beach access. It's a small location with tent facilities and some 59 paved units.

Mile 164 - Yachats welcomes you...known as the "Gem of the Oregon Coast", this unique little village is nestled between the mountains and the sea. It's a secluded resort village beckoning people from all over the globe to participate in natures wonderlands along the southern Oregon coast.

This attractive place, yet popular, there is no tourist rustle and bustle. There is no easy access to bring the inland crowds, you have to travel along the coast to reach this little gem, it's secluded away from the week-enders. Folks come to Yachats to stroll along the rocky beaches, glare into the tide pools or hike along the woodland trails. During the winter months, it's a place to marvel at the Pacific storms as they dance offshore, crashing against the headlands.

The Yachats River is well known for a fishing river along the southern Oregon coast. It's a great place for cutthroat trout. Along the flat grassy area near the river, you can marvel in wonder as you watch the elk feed. Stop in at the visitors center, they'll fill you in with the details.

Mile 169 - Cape Perpetua Scenic Area is some 2700 areas of majestic lands with inspiring views along the southern Oregon Coast. You have 22 miles of looping trails to explore. To have access to the area you'll need a Northwest Forest Service Pass. You can also pay the entrance fee, at the time of this writing it's $5 or purchase the pass for $30. We have a pass because it gives us unlimited usage to several areas in Oregon and Washington.
